People who suffer from addictions are treated poorly and even criminally in our society. Addiction can be viewed as a moral flaw or lack of willpower. It’s neither. It’s a disease of the limbic system of the brain. Not all of those who abuse alcohol and drugs are addicts. If we’re wounded psychically or suffer from an alternate mood or anxiety disorder, why wouldn’t we respond strongly to anything that seems to alleviate that pain? Misplaced or untreated emotional pain fuels depression, anxiety, and a feeling of not being safe in the world. If we can find something, anything, that helps us bypass these emotions and makes us feel better, it makes sense that many of us are drawn to that escape, be it alcohol, pot, opioids, cocaine, gambling, porn, food, shopping, whatever, ultimately resulting in problems that are far worse than the initial underlying issue .
Actual addiction is a progression from “wanting” to “needing” and manifests in three distinct ways:
- Craving for the object of addiction.
- Loss of control over its use, compulsion to use.
- Continuing involvement with it despite adverse consequences.
There is help in discerning if you are on the path of addiction and what treatment options are appropriate.
